How engine
lubrication works.

Follow the oil. Understand what keeps the engine moving.

Engine lubrication: interactive wet-sump cutawayAn original generic four-cylinder engine cutaway. Select a component to read its function. Oil travels from the sump through the submerged pickup, pump and filter. The filtered circuit branches to the crankshaft bearings and camshaft feeds. Separate return passages carry oil down into the sump. Hardware is stationary; moving marks indicate flow direction only.

About the model & sources

A model for understanding

This is a generic, simplified wet-sump lubrication circuit. The engine geometry, moving oil and playback rates are illustrative. Oil passages are exposed and repositioned for clarity. The engine remains stationary. The exhibit does not calculate pressure, temperature, oil volume or vehicle fitment.

After the galleries, oil feeds several branches at the same time. Stage selection is a reading aid, not a sequence that shuts other branches off.

Pump pressure relief diverts flow to limit pressure. Filter bypass responds to the pressure difference across the filter. Neither valve is animated here; engine-specific arrangements vary.
