The counterfeit-parts crisis nobody talks about

Roughly 40% of automotive parts circulating in Bangladesh today are counterfeit or grey-market. The cost — to consumers, OEMs, and the public — is north of $1B annually. Here's how supply-chain intelligence finally fixes it.
Bangladesh has roughly 5 million vehicles in operation. Their owners spend close to $4B a year keeping them on the road. Estimates suggest 40% of the parts they buy are counterfeit, grey-market, or relabelled. Most consumers don't know. Many workshops don't either.
The bill is staggering — over $1B annually, paid in shorter vehicle life, higher accident risk, lost OEM warranty revenue, and a quiet erosion of trust across the entire industry. And it has been hiding in plain sight for two decades because nobody has had a clean view of the supply chain.
$1B+ Annual cost of counterfeit auto parts in Bangladesh
Why the problem persists
Three reinforcing dynamics keep the counterfeit market thriving:
- The supply chain has no source-of-truth — workshops can't tell which distributor bought from which importer who bought from which factory.
- Counterfeit margin is enormous — a fake brake pad costs ⅕ of an authentic one and sells for ¾ of the price.
- Liability is diffuse — if a counterfeit failure causes an accident, no single party is clearly responsible. So no single party invests in fixing it.
How supply-chain intelligence breaks the loop
JOY's solution is not enforcement — that's a government's job, and it doesn't scale. Our solution is infrastructure: make the authentic supply chain so transparent, fast, and cheap that the counterfeit one stops being economic.
- Direct-to-importer sourcing — one less link in the chain means one less margin for a counterfeit reseller to hide in.
- Verified-supplier badges — workshops can see, for every SKU, which suppliers JOY has audited and which have failed authenticity checks.
- Per-batch traceability — every part shipped through JOY's logistics network carries a batch ID linkable to its source factory.
- AI fitment matching — counterfeit parts often fail VIN-level fitment validation. JOY catches these before they ship.
Trust isn't a marketing campaign. It's a supply chain.
The compounding effect
Every workshop that switches from grey-market to authentic supply takes a slice of demand out of the counterfeit market. Every supplier we audit removes a node from it. Every batch we trace shrinks its visibility.
We won't fix the counterfeit-parts crisis in a year. But within five, we believe we can shift the authentic-vs-counterfeit ratio in Bangladesh from 60/40 to 90/10 — and along the way, build a moat no incumbent can replicate without rebuilding their entire supply chain.
